Do I have a prolapse?

…This is a common question many women ask themselves at different stages of life. Prolapse is where the vaginal walls have become lax and/ or where the uterus is sitting lower than it would normally. Symptoms include a sense of heaviness/ pressure/ dragging/ bulging in the vagina, and sometimes difficulty emptying the bladder or bowels. It is not usually painful, however women do describe the experience as being unpleasant and upsetting.

The good news is, most often pelvic physiotherapy can help! By learning how to correctly isolate the pelvic floor muscles and being set a program that is right for your level of movement you can learn to better support the muscles that provide lift in this area. For some, also combining a program of core muscle strengthening can be beneficial.

With specialist pelvic health physiotherapy, we would look to understand through assessment, the full extent of your prolapse symptoms, and what your pelvic floor is doing currently. We advise on which lifestyle adjustments and exercise best support your prolapse and can advise when further input beyond physiotherapy might be warranted.

We are extremely lucky to be able to offer pelvic health services to a number of locations across Oxfordshire and creep across the Northamptonshire border too.  Please see our locations page to find a pelvic health clinic that can help with our prolapse and offer assessment and help with your symptoms.
